Ingredients
4 large apples, cored and sliced
1/4 cup of brown sugar
2 teaspoons of cinnamon
2 tablespoons of butter, melted
1/4 cup of water
For the whole wheat bread:
1/4 cup of warm water
2 teaspoons of active dry yeast
1 teaspoon of sugar
3 cups of whole wheat flour
1 teaspoon of salt
2 tablespoons of olive oil
3/4 cup of water
1/4 cup of milk
1 egg, beaten, for brushing
Sesame seeds, for sprinkling
Directions
- To make the baked apples, preheat the oven to 375°F and grease a 9×13 inch baking dish. In a large bowl, toss the apple slices with the brown sugar and cinnamon. Arrange them in a single layer on the prepared baking dish. Drizzle the melted butter and water over the apples. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes, until the apples are tender and bubbly.
- To make the whole wheat bread, in a small bowl, whisk together the warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let it sit for 10 minutes, until frothy.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture, oil, water, and milk. Stir with a wooden spoon until a shaggy dough forms. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 15 minutes, until smooth and elastic. You may need to add more flour or water as needed to get the right consistency.
- Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl and cover with a damp cloth. Let it rise in a warm place for about an hour, until doubled in size.
- Preheat the oven to 375°F and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball and place them on the prepared baking sheet, leaving some space between them. Cover with a damp cloth and let them rise for another 30 minutes, until puffy.
- Brush the tops of the rolls with the beaten egg and sprinkle with sesame seeds. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, until golden and hollow sounding when tapped. Transfer to a wire rack and let them cool slightly.
- Serve the baked apples with the whole wheat bread, or store in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
